I don’t dislike Twenty20 cricket, in fact it offers you something completely different from both the Test arena and the one-day arena. But the recent one-off match against England was pointless, especially for one individual.

FULL SCOREBOARD FOR AUSTRALIA VS ENGLAND ODI

Queenslander Cameron Boyce flew 33,000 kilometres for one over against the English.

I think he will be the first to tell you it wasn’t his greatest after seeing it go for 19 runs. To be fair, he was bowling on a batsmen’s paradise and with boundaries the size of an Under-15s ground, but that’s another topic.

The point is that the Australian cricket selectors have made him travel all the way to the United Kingdom to play in one game and unfortunately he was only able to bowl one over.

I’m struggling to see how this helps the talented leg-spinner develop and become a better bowler for the future. Why can’t we see this man be included in the one-day international squad so he may be able to play a couple of games and be around the team?

There’s no denying the selectors see him as part of the rebuilding phase that Australian cricket is currently undertaking, although they somehow think bowling one over in a meaningless T20 game will further enhance him as a player.

I’m left baffled with this decision and I’m sure I’m not the only one. I’m not saying he deserved to bowl more overs against Moeen Ali and Eoin Morgan, I’m simply suggesting that we should be looking to keep him on tour so he can prove himself and gain further confidence in the international arena.

Boyce has proved before that he can handle the pressure of international cricket and this one over doesn’t reflect the cricketer we know.

I think if we are being honest, there isn’t a better opportunity to blood more players than with this one-day international series. The more time we give these cricketers, whether it’s with the stick or with the ball, the better.

Steve Smith did come out at the press conference after the game and stated Boyce will learn from his over and I don’t disagree with that, but surely giving the bloke more of a crack further down the line in upcoming series will see him learn even more?

It’s a fairly young squad and quite an exciting one, but make Boyce’s 24-hour flight a meaningful one and include him in the squad for the one-day games.

There’d be no better way to prepare him for the upcoming summer of cricket as well. Bowling to the likes of Ali, Morgan, Jos Buttler and company will only be beneficial for himself and Australian cricket.

The Australian selectors had an ordinary time with selection in the Ashes series and this only adds to it. I really cannot come up with any positives about flying Boyce over for this one match to only bowl one over. I suppose the question is, can you?
