Australia’s Jarmila Gajdosova will be looking to upset Flavia Pennetta when the duo face each other in the opening round of the US Open.

Join The Roar for a live blog of the match from 6:30am AEST.

If Gajdosova is to win today’s match though, she must reverse her recent form in WTA events.

In her last eight WTA events, she has won just one main draw match, and lost three of her last four matches. Not ideal form heading into the final Grand Slam of the year.

She faces Italian Flavia Pennetta, who took a set off of Serena Williams at the recent WTA event in Toronto. The Italian has also played well at the US Open.

She has been a quarter finalist, or better, in three of the last four events. This included a semi-final in 2013 where she lost to Victoria Azarenka. Pennetta also reached the US Open doubles final last year with Martina Hingis.

The current world number 26 loves this place. These two have faced each other three times over the last eight years with Pennetta leading 2-1. The last contest though, in Wuhan last year, was won by the Aussie in straight sets.

Gajdosova dominated the contest, serving ten aces, and winning 92% of points on the first serve. She also had 10 break points on the Pennetta serve.

I’d be surprised if this happened again with Pennetta better on the American hard courts. She is also in better form than her Australian rival.

This match will be close with both players capable of producing plenty of power from the baseline. Whoever can make less unforced errors will be the player most likely to win.

With Pennetta’s record at the US Open, compared to the Aussie, I favour her to win the match. Gajdosova may win a set but Pennetta will be too strong for the Aussie.

Prediction – Pennetta 2-1
