South Sydney coach Michael Maguire has addressed his players to quash rumours he could be heading to Newcastle next season.

A day after Souths chairman Nick Pappas doused suggestions that Maguire would be leaving Redfern despite having two years left on his contract, Rabbitohs players revealed the premiership winning mentor had put such talk to bed.

Back-rower Kyle Turner said Maguire told the group he would see out his current contract with the NRL club.

“Madge has told us he’s with us and we’re with him,” Turner said.

“He’s just focusing on this year and this year alone, we’re just focusing on what we can. The next two years he’s with us I’m pretty sure, and his main focus is us boys, he’s helping us all he can.”

Jason Clark said the rumours had not been a distraction to the Rabbitohs ahead of their crucial final-round clash with arch-rivals Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Friday.

“We are not unsettled about that, Madge will be here for two more years, he came and spoke to us personally and he said he will be here, he is here to do the job and we are happy about that,” Clark said.

“It was in-house and positive and we are just worrying about this week. He just dusted it off and said not to worry about it.”

English prop George Burgess added: “We all know that Madge wasn’t going anywhere so no one really worried about it I don’t think.

“He just told the boys (he is staying), but we are all pretty certain on it anyway.”
