The Swiss Master Roger Federer begins his quest for a sixth US Open when he takes on the Argentinian ranked 34th in the world Leonardo Mayer, in what shapes as an interesting contest.

Federer has, as said above already won five illustrious US Open titles, however the last of these came in 2008. Since then at the US Open, generally speaking we have seen a decline in results, although it spiked last year with a semi final appearance.

Despite that, the last time he was knocked out in the first round of any grand slam was way back in 2003 at the French Open, so don’t expect that to be happening. Furthermore, he has never been knocked out in the first round of the US Open.

Since his runner up status at Wimbledon, Federer has only played in the one hard court tournament which came at Cincinnati. In that tournament he went all the way to the end, eventually defeating Novak Djokovic, the man who beat him at Wimbledon in the final.

On the way through that tournament he also defeated highly seeded players Andy Murray and Kevin Anderson. It is also recognisable that the hard court is one of Federer’s best surfaces with a winning percentage of 82%, up on his career average.

Mayer meanwhile, since being knocked out in the third round at Wimbledon, has been to many tournaments on the hard court and has form that can’t be described as good. He hasn’t made it past the third round of any of these tournaments and has been knocked out by Kei Nishikori, Jeremy Chardy and Kevin Anderson.

Maybe this is reflected by his less than impressive record on hard courts. Winning only just over half of his games throughout his career on the hard court as well as never making it out of the third round at the US Open, mean the stats do stack up against Mayer for this first round match.

In saying that he has only ever been knocked out in the first round once in New York.

The pair have met once before, near the end of last year in the Shanghai Masters. Whilst Federer did manage to take that match, it was not at all in convincing fashion having to take three sets to do it and winning both of his sets in tiebreakers.

Prediction: It is incredibly hard to see how Federer is going to lose this one. He is a seasoned professional and Mayer hasn’t been in the best of form, however he won’t go down without a fight and might even take a set.

Federer in 4 sets.
