Can Brom forgive Berahino?

Generally when a player does not want to be at a club, and the manager and fans do not want said player, a change takes place.

Saido Berahino does not want to be at West Brom, and it is difficult to know if manager Tony Pulis wants Saido Berahino at West Brom. As of right now Berahino is still a West Brom player but a lot will need to change for the striker to represent the club again.

When a player has made the decision they no longer wish to be at a club it can be very difficult to have them continuing to perform on the pitch. John Stones at Everton is an interesting case study. Everton have rejected three bids from Chelsea and Stones also handed in a transfer request. Despite this he was not sold, is still an Everton player, and has so far started every league game for Everton. Berahino has not quite followed the same path.

It is amazing to think one of the main ways supporters and pundits measure the happiness of a player is on social media in particular. As soon as Berahino stopped following West Brom on Twitter, it seemed obvious he did not want to be there. Berahino had spent most of pre-season angling for a move away but it never transpired.

Berahino was left out of the fixture against Chelsea just over a week ago due to disruptive behaviour and he has had minimal involvement before with performances below expectation for some time.

After Berahino’s desired move to Tottenham failed to materialise in the transfer window Berahino made his views public on twitter straight away, advising he would never play at the club again while chairman Jeremy Pearce was still present. The Football Association is expected to get involved in the dispute; obviously both parties will need to be reminded of their responsibilities.

Views certainly seemed mixed on whether West Brom has done the right thing. It certainly appears the club was happy to sell if the price was right. The reported price Tottenham offered was £21 million. But the terms of the deal involved a lot of clauses with only £5-7 million paid up-front. That was not enough money for West Brom to sign ready-made replacements.

It will be fascinating to see how this situation plays out. Certainly it is difficult to know if the relationship can be repaired any time soon. We have seen plenty of examples in the past of players doing back flips on proposed transfers. The West Brom fans are rightfully not happy with the antics and attitude of Berahino.

Football fans are passionate and love their club so Berahino has a lot of work to win back their trust. Maybe a few goals and all will be forgiven.
