Before the 1995 World Cup he was relatively unknown, but it didn’t take Jonah Lomu long to establish himself as rugby’s wrecking ball and one of the most dominant players in history with a record 15 tries during his 11-game World Cup career.

Lomu was picked for New Zealand’s 1995 squad with just two caps to his name. He proceeded to score seven tries in five games. He saved his best efforts for the semi-final against England, where he famously ran straight over the top of England defender Mike Catt.

Despite his incredible individual performances, Lomu never won a World Cup. In 1999 he scored a record eight tries in the tournament, including two in the semi-final against France, but the All Blacks failed to win the match.

Lomu’s incredible 63-match career for the All Blacks became even more remarkable when he started to reveal his medical troubles at the end of his career. Since 1995 Lomu had battled nephrotic syndrome, a chronic kidney disorder, which he and team doctors managed to keep a secret.

Jonah Lomu was recognised for his achievements in the game with inductions to both the International Rugby and IRB Hall of Fame.
