2015 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes: My top five to watch

The Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) will be the feature race at Moonee Valley on Saturday, September 5th, and the race is an important one for some of the horses who will look to have eyes on feature Victorian spring races.

Runners in this are looking for bigger and better things such as the Caulfield Cup, and the Cox Plate after racing in this Saturday’s feature race in Melbourne.

Here’s my top five.

3. Mourinho – Barrier 3
A Darryl Blackshaw trained horse who has won the last three of his Group 2 races, which included his last start at Caulfield in the 1400m Lawrence Stakes, where he was able to beat Tasmanian horse The Cleaner.

Blackshaw will be eyeing off an entry for Mourinho into this year’s Cox plate after this race so a performance is crucial. He’ll be in a good position after start according to the speed map and with Vlad Duric as jockey he is a certain place getter if he repeats some of his prime form. He will win if he can overtake The Cleaner once again as well as race favourite Contributer, who will be coming at The Cleaner as well.

4. Contributer – Barrier 2
This horse has been in prime form. He has won the last three of his races and two of those have been at Group 1 level. He is strong favourite to take out this race and you would think with Dwayne Dunn in charge and with a winning range of 1400m-2017m he will be able to win and progress to his next challenge in this year Spring Racing Carnival. This horse is certainly one to watch and is a likely winner!

5. The Cleaner – Barrier 7
The Tasmanian horse The Cleaner has been fully embraced by the state of Tasmania ever since his appearance in big time racing. Came runner up to Mourinho last start at Caulfield after leading until the death. Won this race this time last year and is a big chance to win if he produces simular form to last start. Needs to obviously hold off Mourinho this time around; the Cox Plate is the ultimate goal after this.

8. Bagman – Barrier 10
A Chris Waller trained horse who has won his last two races that have both been ran at 2000m or more. Hasn’t been a very impressive in some of the short distance races he has started in last racing season but with a winning range between 1200m-2040m he makes the top 5 for sure, and at long odds.

9. Big Memory – Barrier 1
A horse that has nominated for both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate in this year’s spring racing carnival. Had a poor start out of the gate last race in the PB Lawrence Stakes but managed to finish 4th considering he was at the back of the race for all of it until the last 400m.

If he can start out of gate well and get in a good position early then he might just take it up to Mourinho, Contributer and The Cleaner and finish in a solid place. Damien Oliver is more then experienced so he will know what to do.

My Final Tips:
1. Contributer
2. The Cleaner
3. Mourinho
