The relationship between Russia and the Ukraine will become even more tense as each of their best female tennis players go head-to-head in a third round match-up in New York.
Russian Ekaterina Makarova will want to use her strong backhand to target the young Elina Svitolina. Her groundstrokes will also prove critical as she looks to wear out her opponent and attempt to use her first serve to get easy points through ace.
In her past ten matches, Makarova has a win-loss record of 7-3 and is seeded at 13, the same position as her ranking on the WTA Tour. The Russian is coming off a win in the second round over Lauren Davis 6-1, 6-2 and a first round win 6-3, 6-3 over Teliana Pereira.
Svitolina’s win-loss record in her last ten matches stands at 6-4, backed by recent wins in straight sets to the 17th seed in the second round over Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-4 and Elizaveta Kulichkova 6-1, 6-4.
Elina Svitolina has improved since her last match against Makarova and will certainly close the apparent gap in their last meeting by forcing their first ever three set encounter.
Unlike her opponent she has great movement and will want to be on her feet as much as possible to stop the race with Makarova.
Her mental game may prove to be just as important with her tactical mentality to prove crucial to dethroning the second-in-command Russian tennis queen.
Makarova and Svitolina have played twice, the first match-up at Sydney this year with a win in straight sets to Makarova 7-6, 6-2 and the most recent also going the way of the Russian 6-0, 6-4.

This match will go right down to the wire with both Makarova and Svitolina an equal chance.
