Jason Day shot a 68 in the opening round of the Deutsche Bank at the TPC Boston today.

He began his round at the 10th, with birdies at the first three holes, turning at 3-under, adding birdies at the first and third holes, but two late bogeys dented his card.

The bogey at the last was his first three-putt for 326 holes.

According to the PGA tour, Day will realise his most cherished ambition to be the world number one if he wins the Deutsche Bank and both Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth finish worse than third.

When that day comes, and it will, Day will be the third Australian to have the honour after Greg Norman who was number one for 331 weeks, and Adam Scott for 11.

Playing with Spieth and Bubba Watson today, the 27-year-old Australian showed them both a clean pair of heels – Spieth shot 75 and Watson 73, while McIlroy carded a 70.

Day’s performances of late have been nothing short of sensational, winning three of his last four tournaments.

But he has remained humble. When asked yesterday who he thought would be the USPGA Player of the Year, Day said “Right now it’s Jordan Spieth, but another win or two and maybe my name will be in the mix”.

Including today’s 68, Day is 62-under par for the 17 rounds, with 5 eagles, 87 birdies, 28 bogeys, 2 doubles, and a triple.
