Can Victoria Azarenka book a spot in the semifinals or will Simona Halep be able to stop her from progressing at the US Open?

Join The Roar for live scores from around 2.30am (AEST) following the completion of Petra Kvitova and Flavia Pennetta.

Halep has never been to the quarter-finals at New York and may struggle to cope with the rigours of the finals stages of the US Open. The Romanian is experienced, however, and has previously been to the final at the 2014 French Open, showing her ability to fight against the WTA Tour’s top players.

Simona is seeded second with a win-loss record of 8-2, her only losses coming at the hands of Belinda Bencic and Serena Williams at the Canadian and Cincinnati Masters respectively.

To get to the quarter-finals, Halep has had to overcome Marina Erakovic whom she defeated in the first round due to retirement as well as second round opponent Kateryna Bondarenko, winning 6-3, 6-4.

She has also defeated American Shelby Rogers 6-2, 6-3 in the third round and won in three sets during the fourth round over 24th seed Sabine Lisicki 6-7, 7-5, 6-2.

Victoria Azarenka is the 20th tournament seed and has a win-loss record of 8-2. Her US Open campaign began with a straight sets win over Lucie Hradecka in the first round 6-1, 6-2.

The second round saw Azarenka defeat Yanina Wickmayer in consecutive sets 7-5, 6-4, setting her up with 11th seed Angelique Kerber in the third round. Kerber went down in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 4-6 with her opponent progressing to a fourth round fixture against unseeded American Varvara Lepchenko in which she won 6-3, 6-4.

Azarenka has struggled recently at grand slams being knocked out during the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, at the third round of Roland Garros and the fourth round of the Australian Open. Her struggle, however, has not been apparent at this year’s US Open with the Belarusian fighting for her first title at New York after conceding losses in the final of 2012 and 2013.

Halep and Azarenka have played each other twice, with Victoria winning on both occasions. They have never met at Grand Slams, and have not played since 2012 when Azarenka defeated Halep in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 during the Generali Ladies Linz.

Previously they met at the 2012 Qatar Open with Azarenka once again winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

Prediction
Halep will set up a semifinal match-up with either Petra Kvitova or Flavia Pennetti.
