Roar appeal against Brattan dismissed

Luke Brattan is free to play for whichever club he wants after an appeal lodged by Brisbane Roar over his departure was dismissed.

The 25-year-old Socceroos midfielder is looking to play in Europe after terminating his Brisbane Roar contract.

Brattan elected to opt out of his deal after the Roar failed to pay their players and staff throughout the Australian winter.

PFA chief Adam Vivian was adamant the decision to allow Brattan to move is the right one.

“The club repeatedly breached Luke’s contract by failing to pay his superannuation and the decision once again confirms this,” said Vivian.

“Non-payment of player entitlements is simply unacceptable and this is the consequence of a club failing to meet its obligations to a player.”

Roar owners The Bakrie Group recently earned a stay of execution by paying $1 million in funds into the club’s coffers.

They did this just prior to the deadline set by Football Federation Australia who were ready to take back the Brisbane Roar licence if outstanding debts were not paid.

“The funds are sufficient to pay the monthly salaries and begin the process to recapitalise the club business,” FFA CEO David Gallop said on Tuesday.

“FFA’s current warning to the Bakrie Group on the status of the A-League licence remains in place until we are satisfied all undertakings are met.”
