Scandals off the field have dominated headlines in 2015, but Nathan Friend’s remarkable try assist in Round 18 was a welcome distraction and provided a viral moment to savour.

Friend’s jump and backflip offload against the Melbourne Storm received the top gong at the Dally M Awards under the Peter Frilingos Headline Moment category.

Friend’s backflip, tunnelball pass was one of those moments where the game surprises and you witness something new.

To cap off the move Tuimoala Lolohea then scored a try in the corner with minimal space to work in. The winger’s try in the corner, once considered freakish is now commonplace in the NRL.

Perhaps Friend’s backflip will become a standard offload in a few years?
