Ipswich take out NRL State Championship

Chris and Shane Walker have announced they are ready for senior rugby league coaching ranks after guiding Ipswich Jets to the NRL National Championship with a 26-12 win over Newcastle.

The Walkers’ experimental coaching style paid dividends as the Jets bamboozled the Knights, opening up a 14-6 lead, and veteran Rod Griffin put the icing on the cake 10 minutes from fulltime.

The game reached a boiling point late in the second half when Scottish international Billy McConnachie punched Knights fullback Jake Mamo, knocking him down.

While Mamo was forced to leave the field with the aid of two trainers, McConnachie was not sin-binned.

The Queensland Cup champions have made waves with their unconventional style of football this year – including implementing short kickoffs and a lot of sideways movement in attack.

The Walker brothers are considered NRL coaches in waiting and last month were overlooked for the Newcastle head coaching job.

Manly-bound hooker Matt Parcell opened the scoring after darting out of dummy half in the third minute.

Marmin Barba, the younger brother of Cronulla utility Ben, scored the try of the match when he steamed onto a Griffin offload and ran 90 metres to make it 20-12.

A Jaelen Feeney try gave the Knights a sniff before Griffin’s try killed off the game.
