We head into the October international break after a month of football where we saw the resignation of Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat and the inevitable sacking of Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

We also saw one of the highest scoring Premier League months with 88 goals. Two matches ended with seven goals (Leicester 2-5 Arsenal, Manchester City 6-1 Newcastle) and there were also eight results that were won by a home team who scored three goals or more to win.

In this article we’ll focus on five players who stood out and made a difference this month. Who scored goals, who kept them out, and who scored points for their club.

5. Brendan Galloway – Everton
Galloway has filled in for veteran Leighton Baines, who will be out for another month, and he has more than impressed us so far. His first ever start came against West Ham last season and since then he has become accustomed to patrolling with John Stones.

He began the month keeping Branislav Ivanovic quiet and pocketing Pedro in an amazing 3-1 win against Chelsea where he also assisted Steven Naismith’s first goal.

A 0-0 draw in Wales and a triumphant win against West Brom closed a terrific month. The 19-year-old proved one of the best defenders in September averaging four possession-winning tackles a game.

4. Riyad Mahrez – Leicester City
Mahrez, the early season bloomer, having scored one goal and assisting two in September has kept Leicester’s dreams alive in the top four.

His two assists against Aston Villa sparked a terrific comeback to win 3-2 at home where the Algerian put through Jamie Vardy to win three points.

He also scored the penalty to earn a draw away at Stoke. Unfortunately his dazzling month ended against Arsenal where they lost 2-5. Mahrez will no doubt be back in the goals soon.

3. Jamie Vardy – Leicester City
It comes as no surprise that two Leicester players feature on this list. Scoring four goals in three matches in September was Jamie Vardy. Two of his goals proved match winners, with a 90th minute strike winning the match against Aston Villa, and an equaliser against Stoke City earning a point away.

He came out roaring against the Gunners, opening the scoring after just 15 minutes. He later went on to just score a consolation as Leicester lost their first game of the season 2-5.

Vardy is currently top scorer in the league (7) and has scored in five consecutive games. He has also been involved directly in a goal in every game this season.

2. Dimitri Payet – West Ham United
Payet has been of utmost importance so far for West Ham’s season. Payet downed the Magpies, scoring two terrific goals to win 2-0 at the Boleyn Ground. The Frenchman also kept the Hammers’ outstanding away record alive, assisting Victor Moses’ thunder strike against Manchester City.

Payet also got another assist in a tough 2-2 draw at home to Norwich. He continues to provide goals and holds the record this season for the most chances created. It’s no wonder West Ham are fifth.

1. Anthony Martial – Manchester United
What else can we say… 38 million pounds (almost) well spent. Anthony Martial was subject of constant scepticism at the beginning of the month, until he went and danced around the Swans defence to score a terrific goal that sent fans, neutrals and Martin Tyler into wonderland.

He followed it up with a brace at St Mary’s Stadium and an assist against Sunderland has set himself up nicely to be paying off his lofty price tag.

The manger of the month goes to Mauricio Pochettino of Tottenham who won three from three against Sunderland, Crystal Palace and an emphatic 4-1 win over Manchester City.

We now enter an international break, with Premier League action will returning on October 17.
