Day would relish Spieth match up at Cup

Jason Day would love the chance battle head to head with world No.1 Jordan Spieth in this week’s Presidents Cup, but he accepts team strategy may rule out the mouth-watering match up.

World No.2 Day said he appreciated the level of interest would be high if the two met in the singles contests on the final day of the four-day competition between his International team and the mighty United States side in Incheon, South Korea on Sunday.

“I think a lot of people around the world are interested to see if that will happen,” Day told reporters on Tuesday.

“It would be a lot of fun playing against Jordan, but then again I’m not too sure what the strategy is with that.”

Whether the two meet will be down to the non-playing captains, Nick Price (Internationals) and Jay Haas (US) when they do the final day draw.

“Will they hold Jordan to wait for my name, or will captain Price hold my name for Jordan? Or maybe he wants me to go out early and get a point up,” Day said.

“It all depends on where the points are, how everyone is playing … and from there make that decision who I’ll play against.

“But I think it would be a lot of fun. We’ve both played pretty good golf (this year).”

Day would doubtless be glad if it did come down to a strategic decision as it would mean the Internationals were still in contention to snatch only their second win in 11 editions of the biennial Presidents Cup.

The only win was at Royal Melbourne way back in 1998.

Day said the entire Internationals team, including fellow Australian Adam Scott, who will make his seventh appearance at a Presidents Cup, were hungry to correct the record.

“I think everyone’s kind of fed up with it; that we have been losing for a while now,” Day said.
