Whincup had earlier this week hosed down talk that lap records would be under threat at Bathurst this year despite the introduction of a new gearing set-up.

Teams have removed a “rev-limiter” which had stopped acceleration and restricted top speeds to 297kph.

It sparked speculation that drivers would crack the 300kph barrier for the first time down the legendary Conrod Straight.

Meanwhile, controversial driver David Reynolds appeared to have lost little of his pace after making headlines for all the wrong reasons on Thursday.

Reynolds was seventh fastest (2:05.94) in Friday’s final practice after setting the early pace.

He was fined $25,000 for making an offensive remark towards the all-female team of Renee Gracie and Simona de Silvestro.

They are the first all-female team at Bathurst since 1998.

De Silvestro (2:08.96) was second last on the timesheets in the 27-strong field in final practice.

Co-driver Gracie said she had accepted Reynolds’ apology.

“Being female you always get comments that aren’t as friendly as you want them to be but it is something that I have learned to deal with,” Gracie told Nine Network.

“I have a thick skin thankfully.”
