Wales have caused a shock upset after defeating defending champion Scotland in Wrexham to open their European Championship campaign.

Their victory proves John Kear’s side have come a long way after last year failing to win a single game with heavy losses to Scotland 42-18, France 42-22 and Ireland 46-14.

The flame has been well and truly lit as the Dragons look to qualify for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup to be held across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. They have sent a warning to Ireland, Italy, Russia and Serbia that they mean business and will not be easy to beat.

Scotland never hit the lead with Wales scoring first through Gloucestershire All Golds star Steve Parry after he broke through the Scottish defence to go under the posts. Fellow All Golds player Courtney Davies converted.

Davies was then the victim of a dangerous tackle, kicking a penalty goal for Wales to be in front by eight points.

The Bravehearts soon hit back with Bradford Bulls lock Dale Ferguson scoring under the posts and captain Danny Brough converting.

Dalton Grant showed glimpses of his outstanding season with Dewsbury Rams after scoring in the corner to put Wales in front 12-6 at the half-time break.

Ferguson came close to scoring early in the second half but was held up over the line. The Dragons were put into action with Walker again kicking a penalty goal before Wakefield Wildcat Anthony Walker bundled over after a joint-effort with London Broncos winger Rhys Williams and halfback Ollie Olds of Souths Logan Magpies.

Williams’ Broncos teammate Oscar Thomas scored for Scotland with his try converted by Brough but it wasn’t enough in the end with Wales taking the win.

Wales 18 (Tries: S.Parry, D.Grant, A.Walker; Goals: C.Davies 3/5) defeated
Scotland 12 (Tries: D.Ferguson, O.Thomas; Goals: D.Brough 2/2)

Wales receive a week off before heading south to Cardiff to take on France.

Scotland will host Ireland next week at Netherdale, Galashiels.
