Match Result:

The Diamonds have continued their dominance over the Silver Ferns with Caitlin Bassett landing 38 goals in the six goal victory in Christchurch.

At the other end of the court Laura Geitz was at her absolute best giving the Silver Fern attack absolutely no time, and forcing a number of turnovers.

It will be back to the drawing board for the Silver Ferns who will need to bounce back and try and find a way to stop Bassett if they are to get back in this series.

Game 2 takes place on Thursday in Auckland.

Final Score:
Diamonds 50 Defeat the Silver Ferns 44

New Zealand will be looking to claim their first Constellation Cup win in two years and avenge their recent World Cup final loss when they host Australia in the opening game of the 2015 series.

It’s been a series that the Kiwis have struggled in of late – since the Constellation Cup was introduced in 2010, Australia have dominated their cross-Tasman rivals claiming four of the five series, and Australia have been particularly dominant recently, claiming 2014’s four-Test series 4-0 and 2013’s five-Test series 4-1.

The Australians will be looking to carry on their World Cup form and have a great opportunity to put the pressure on New Zealand with the final two games of the four-Test series to be played in Melbourne (October 25) and Perth (October 30).

For the Silver Ferns it will be crucial that they secure a win in either Christchurch tonight or Auckland on Thursday, as heading to Australia down in the series would likely prove too big of a task to overcome.

Despite the Australian’s status as World Champions, the Silver Ferns are looking settled and set for a strong series, making just the one change to their World Cup side from August, with goal attack Maria Tutaia being replaced by Ameliaranne Wells.

With three retirements following their World Cup win (Julie Corletto, Bec Bulley and Kim Gree) it will be interesting to see who Diamonds’ coach Lisa Alexander opts to play, not just in this match but the remaining three, as Australia look to build from a place that can often be strangely difficult to build from – the top.

Can the Silver Ferns get their 2015 Constellation Cup off to the perfect start? Or will the Diamonds rub salt into the still-healing Kiwi wounds?
