Match result:

The Brisbane Roar march on with their third win of the season, recording an impressive 3-0 win over Adelaide United.

The match started in quite an entertaining fashion, as both sides were very eager to get things going. Sergio Cirio almost scored within the first minute only to be denied by Jamie Young, who was impressive all night.

It didn’t take long though for the Roar to open the scoring, as Brandon Borrello slotted home the first of the match after some great build up play.

The match then became an arm wrestle, as both teams maintained possession, but eventually opened up completely with the Reds lifting, creating numerous opportunities before the break.

The second half continued where the first left of. The Reds made countless advances into their attacking box, however wasted numerous opportunities, not making the most of their dominance. Jamie Young was keeping brilliantly between the sticks and he made many crucial saves, maintaining his side’s lead.

Brisbane then flexed their muscle as Jamie Maclaren scored his third of the season with a world class finish into the top corner, before Borrello doubled his money with his second in stoppage time.

The scoreline doesn’t reflect how well Adelaide played, however their inability to finish remains a problem as they were once again punished for not being able to find the back of the net.

The season has started brightly for the Roar under new boss John Aloisi.

Brisbane won their first two games, playing in a very entertaining fashion, before going down to Wellington last week in a thrilling, five-goal contest.

For this match, the Roar welcome back defender Shane Steffanuto from injury as well as Shannon Brady. Goalkeeper Jamie Young gets another chance, as Michael Theo continues to recover from injury.

New manager Guillermo Amor has continued with his predecessor’s, style of play, with Adelaide leading the league for the amount of time spent on the ball, averaging 59.4 per cent of possession in their matches.

Despite this, Adelaide have failed to deliver in the opening rounds of the new season, and disturbingly no player has found the back of the net – their two goals thus far have come from own goals.

The Reds need a striker to burst onto the scene, as new recruit Ali Babaj is yet to make an impact. The return of Bruce Djite bolsters the forward line, hopefully delivering the extra firepower so desperately needed. Former Australian U17s representative Mark Ochieng makes his league debut, the 18-year-old has been impressive in training and trial matches and will be keen to grasp this opportunity.

This fixture is always entertaining, as both clubs have been masters at maintaining possession and scoring goals. Since 2011, neither team has managed to win by more than one goal. Historically, it’s been a winner take-all affair, with only two draws ever between these sides.

The last time these two sides met was in the elimination final last season, which saw Adelaide United come out victorious in a thrilling battle that could have gone either way.

Arguably, Brisbane’s early season success has been due to the contribution made by their new midfield maestro, Corona. The 34-year-old has had a significant impact, providing quality service to his teammates while dictating the tempo.

Considering the quality of playmakers on display, this match will very much be a midfield battle. With both teams coming off losses last week, a fiery contest is expected.
