Trainer of the winning horse of the 2015 Melbourne Cup Prince of Penzance Darren Weir has given the most Australian of acceptance speeches after the race.

A teary Weir addressed the crowds at Flemington after his horse passed the post in first place, much to the surprise of most of the tipsters in the country.

“It’s a lifetime dream come true, its an unbelievable thing to happen to anyone.”

“I say to the owners, it’s hard enough to get into the race, let alone win it and just enjoy the day and hope like hell we can run top ten,” Weir said.

“I thought the horse was in great shape and there wouldn’t have been many horses that had better preparations than him.

“We did everything possible we could and we had him here in great shape. We thought we were realistically a top 10 chance.”

It’s Weir’s first Melbourne Cup victory as a trainer, as well as Michelle Payne’s first Melbourne Cup win.

Payne was the only female jockey in the race, and she is the first woman to claim the Cup.
