Ahoy roarers! Cup Week concluded on Saturday with a bumper Group 1 program.

The highlight for mine was the Darley Classic (1200m) and it was surprisingly won by the Chris Waller trained Delectation, who charged home from last to grab Chautauqua right on the peg. Chautauqua was excellent in defeat I thought, considering he was near the inner part of the track, which was the inferior ground.

I think swap the positions of he and Delectation, you switch the result, but take nothing away from the Chris Waller galloper. He can be a nightmare to follow, but he deserved a Group 1, as did James McDonald, who had an awfully frustrating Cup Week.

The win of the Carnival, in my opinion, clearly lies with the kiwi star Turn Me Loose, who was just simply unbelievable in winning the Emirates Stakes (1600m).

He led and ran the first 1000m in under minute, and considering it was a soft track, that’s very quick. He had every right to drop out, but he just kept finding and clung on to beat in form mare Politeness.

On first look, she was unlucky, but considering the time Turn Me Loose was running in front, there are no excuses for the beaten brigade.

Bow Creek missed the start so forget he went around, while Magic Artist attempted to make ground near the inside, which wasn’t the place to be. He is going to a serious horse in the Autumn.

The other feature race of the day was the Matriarch Stakes (2000m), and class just simply prevailed with Lucia Valentina getting the job done. It was the easiest race she had contested since her three-year old season, and the massive drop in class was evident when the Group 1 winner peeled to the outside fence and let down hard over the final furlong, beating home Managaress and consistent mare Casino Dancer.

That win will do the Kris Lees trained mare the world of good, and she could easily back up in the Zipping Classic (2400m) and win that too.

Well that’s me done for the Spring Carnival. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed reading what I’ve posted. Have a happy and safe summer and I’ll be back in February to look at Orr Stakes Day at Caulfield.
