By his standards, Israel Folau had a poor tournament. After a number of scans on his ankle injury, it can now be revealed why.

Folau was carrying a serious ankle injury and will now require surgery that will sideline him for three months of rugby.

The Wallabies have confirmed the John Eales’ Medalist will have ankle surgery on Tuesday to fix the injury that he suffered in Australia’s Rugby World Cup win over England in the pool stage.

Despite the pain, Folau continued to play the following weekend against Wales but was eventually forced to miss the Quarter-Final before
returning for the Semi and the decider against the All Blacks.

Even though he went tryless in the tournament Folau still managed to gain the most metres of any Wallabies player and finished inside the top ten for all players in metres gained.

Since making his debut in 2013, Folau has started and played in 38 Tests for the Wallabies, missing only the one match through injury.

Folau will complete his rehabilitation in Sydney and is hopeful of being fit for the Waratahs Super Rugby season opener against the Queensland Reds on February 27.

It does mean he will be forced to pull out of the upcoming Japanese season, a deal he had struck in his latest Waratahs contract to play overseas in between Super Rugby seasons.
