Devastator David Warner is in such superb form, he’s arguably the best batsman in the world right now. He won’t stay at his current ranking of seven for long.

In his last five Test digs – two against England and three against New Zealand – Warner has scored 64, 85, 163, 116, and 244*.

That’s 672 runs at an extraordinary average of 168.

In those five innings Warner’s been the dominant figure in five successive century-plus opening partnerships:

110 with Chris Rogers against England at Trent Bridge.

113 with Rogers against England at The Oval.

161 with Joe Burns against New Zealand at the Gabba in the first innings.

217 with Burns at the Gabba in the second innings.

And 101 with Burns against New Zealand at the WACA.

As if that wasn’t conclusive enough, Warner’s had two big partnerships with Usman Khawaja for the second wicket, with 150 against New Zealand at the Gabba and 302 against New Zealand at the WACA.

Warner’s unbeaten 244 at the WACA yesterday is the second highest score by an Australian on home soil. That title is held by another left-handed Australian opener, Matthew Hayden. His 380 against Zimbabwe at the WACA in October 2003 was then a world record.

The current world Test rankings:
