For the first 27 holes of the Australian Masters at Huntingdale, Adam Scott was majestic with 11 birdies, no bogeys, and leading by five shots.

He was in total command off the tees, on the fairways, and on the greens.

For the next 27 holes Scott has been on another planet – one with seemingly no control.

A double, nine bogeys, and just two birdies for 9-over, and five shots off the pace in a tie for 11th.

That doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

How can a golfer who has been world number one, and now ranked 12th, be so completely upstaged by Matthew Millar ranked 479, Andrew Evans ranked 1704, the 56-year-old Peter Senior ranked 755th, Michael Sim at 1084, John Senden at 80, George McNeill at 113, Alistair Presnell at 1013, Daniel Fox at 488 and Brett Rumford at 346th?

If all of them can be consistent, bar Fox, why can’t Adam Scott?

The 35-year-old will have to shoot in the low 60s today to have any chance of claiming a third gold jacket.

In Dubai, world number three Rory McIlroy is ready to pounce in the season-ending World Tour Championship.

McIlroy’s third round 65, the best of the day, has the Northern Irishman in the final pairing with in-form Englishman Andy Sullivan.

McIlroy only has to finish ahead of Danny Willett to be assured of taking the title in the season-long event.

Special mention must be made of Matthew Fitzpatrick who is likely to finish in the top 10 for the 10th time in his debut season, enough ammunition for the 21-year-old Englishman to be named the European Tour’s Rookie of the Year.
