While newly-crowned Australian Masters champion Peter Senior has discounted his chance of winning this week’s Australian Open, he won’t be content to end his marathon career without another title.
Aged 56, Senior became the oldest player to win the Masters, eclipsing American Gene Littler in 1980 by six years.
He’s now won all the Triple Crown titles – the Masters, Australian Open and Australian PGA – before turning 50 and won them all again since passing the half century.
Despite earning 33 professional titles in a career dating back to 1979, the competitive fire still burns.
Senior will call time on his international career after one more year on the US Champions Tour but before then has some unfinished business.
“The only disappointing thing on the Champions Tour, is that I haven’t won – I’ve lost a few playoffs,” Senior said.
“To win the three main tournaments over here in my 50s and not win over there, it’s one thing I really want to do is just notch up a win before I finish.”
Senior isn’t sure when he will stop playing in Australia but feels golf in in good hands when he does finally pack away the clubs.
He said the Masters’ relatively short Huntingdale course suited his game but the young players will come to the fore this week at The Australian and also in next month’s PGA at Royal Pines.
“The next two weeks, the Australian and Royal Pines, they are a little bit longer than this one,” he said.
“I just had a good week on a course that suited my game.
“These young guys, you go on the courses the next two weeks and watch them play.”
