Former Adelaide Oval groundsman Nathan Lyon says Australia hold a massive advantage entering the inaugural day-night Test match against New Zealand.

Test spinner Lyon believes the experience of the seven NSW players in Australia’s squad of playing in a recent Sheffield Shield game under lights in Adelaide with the pink ball is invaluable.

“We know what to expect. It’s definitely an advantage that we played here a couple of weeks ago under lights with the pink ball,” Lyon told reporters on Wednesday.

The third Test against the Kiwis starts on Friday and Lyon has already sought out Adelaide Oval’s curator and his former boss Damian Hough about the expected conditions.

“I spoke to Damian yesterday and it’s pretty similar to what we played on a couple of weeks ago in the Shield game,” he said.

“It usually swings with the new ball and also under lights it tends to swing a little bit more but I’m more worried about spinning it.

“I’m a big fan of bowling with the pink ball because they (batsmen) can’t see the seam so it’s going to be interesting times.

“The big thing is bowling in the nets and out in the game is having the feedback from some of the best batters in the world that they can’t pick the seam up.”

Lyon said the Australians were eagerly anticipating playing with pink balls.

“We have just got to embrace it. There’s no point sitting here whingeing about it … it’s going to be exciting.”
