FFA open to banned fan appeals

Football Federation Australia has hit back at the suggestion it doesn’t offer an appeals process to banned A-League fans, inviting aggrieved supporters to prove their innocence.

The issue has been in the spotlight since a News Corp Australia report last Sunday which named 198 supporters that have been handed bans from attending the sport.

Active fan groups from the Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory have pledged to walk out from their matches this weekend to protest what they say is a breach of privacy and an unfair policy.

But FFA says it has always provided an avenue of appeal for unfairly maligned fans, requiring them to work with their club to show they have done nothing wrong.

“FFA does not ban spectators lightly but, like any host venue including sporting stadiums and hotels, will refuse entry to persons where we are not satisfied that they will respect the safety and enjoyment of other patrons,” an FFA statement issued on Thursday afternoon said.

“It has always been the case that if a banned person can prove that they did not engage in the relevant behaviour the ban will not apply.

“If a banned person can bring the evidence that proves this to FFA through their club, the ban will be lifted.”
