It’s a great day for lovers of high definition sports as Channel Nine have announced a slew of changes to their list of free-to-air offerings in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Perth, and Darwin.
The key announcement is a new main channel in full 1080 HD, appropriately named 9HD. This will offer everything Channel Nine does currently – which means Cricket, NRL, and all of Nine’s other sports coming at you in high definition.
It makes the Australia vs New Zealand Test at the Adelaide Oval starting tomorrow an even more historic occasion than it already was. Not only is it the first day-night test, but it’ll now be the first full Test under the new HD service, too.
In what they’re calling ‘9HD-Day’ the Nine Network has also made a number of changes to their channel line-up, some minor and some not. There’s a new ‘lifestyle’ channel 9Life, while channels GO and GEM become 9Go! and 9Gem respectively.
The new channels and numbers
90 – 9HD
91 – Channel 9
92 – 9Gem
93 – 9Go!
94 – 9Life
95 – Extra
In order to get these new channels you’ll need to re-tune your TV, essentially as if you’re setting it up new out of the box.
It’s not all good news though – it’s not clear yet when regional services will have access to the new HD channels, and it’s also worth noting that those accessing free-to-air via Foxtel won’t have access to HD resolution either.

And, in fact, Gem has been dropped back to standard definition on Foxtel and regional channels, as Nine push all sport onto the main channel, which makes regional viewers worse off, for now.
