Lance Franklin has opened up for the first time about the personal issues that kept him from playing for the Sydney Swans during the 2015 AFL Finals.

Speaking to Swans TV Franklin addressed his struggles in the time leading up to the finals, and spoke of how thankful he was he made the decision to open up about his problems to his supportive friends, family, and club.

“It was a tough time for myself leading into the finals. I was really struggling,” Franklin said.

“I put my hand up and said I needed help and I’m so glad I did it.

“I took some time away and it was the best decision I’ve made.

“The best thing that I’ve done is put my hand up to get the help that I needed. And that’s the biggest thing for anyone to do, to put your hand up and go, ‘yeah I need the help’.

“If you are struggling I definitely recommend that you ask for that help, because it will change your life, definitely.”

Franklin returned to training on Monday in preparation for the upcoming AFL season.
