Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush is excited by the “amazing opportunity” for the Liverpool Legends, ahead of their clash with Australia Legends in Sydney on January 7.

Rush joined the Liverpool first team during their 2013-14 trip Down Under, and he likened the atmosphere at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to that of a “Champions League final, with 96,00 Liverpool fans there in red shirts, it was very special.”

Although the the Legends side do not have the same appeal as the first team, Rush is hoping that names including Robbie Fowler and Steven Gerrard will offer local fans of all ages a chance to watch their former heroes.

Rush was speaking alongside fellow former Reds stars John Aldridge and Gary McAllister, and McAllister had a gentle warning for the Australia side, saying the game “will start off as a friendly, but we will want to win.”

McAllister travelled as part of the backroom staff for the Reds’ visit to Australia this summer, and described the renditions of ‘You’ll never walk alone’ in both Brisbane and Adelaide as “genuinely gob-smacking”.

“It was mid-blowing to see the amount of support Liverpool has there,” he said.

The game at Sydney’s ANZ is likely to be a sellout, and Australia have named former English Premier League players Mark Bosnich, Brett Emerton and Tony Popovic in their Legends squad.

Harry Kewell, who scored for Liverpool Legends in their summer match against Real Madrid, will not be making an appearance due his coaching commitments with Watford Under 21s.
