NRL stars' threats show the game is a gerontocracy

Once again the superstars of rugby league are threatening to boycott the game that made them because of scheduling. This time they want fewer international football matches.

Are they serious?

It’s atrocious for the superstars to dictate the scheduling of matches. They are getting older and their bodies are struggling, and the younger stars are going to suffer.

They should simply elect to play in certain matches, and let younger stars have a turn in the green and gold for others.

Otherwise we’ll have a huge talent hole when the older stars – who are dictating this boycott – retire.

These ageing stars must realise you cannot have your cake and eat it too. As much as we love them, these are the same voices who would say City versus Country is a useless game. Personally, I really enjoy watching that game.

If player burnout is an issue, rest your stars. I’m tired of coaches banging their drum when things don’t go their way, then turning to the RLPA to threaten a boycott.

The older players should be respected, but shouldn’t be the ruling party of a game that has so much young talent itching for the chance to play.

There is only one way to describe the ruling of the elderly players, a gerontocracy. If these older players want to play well into their 30s, don’t ruin the game for the fans and the younger talent.
