In recent weeks the integrity of our game’s fans have been questioned by those who are running out of ways to halt the development of football in Australia.

Two individuals in particular have blatantly slandered the most passionate fans in the country, the pair even went as far as saying that the actions of a minority of fans was relatable to the catastrophic attacks in Paris.

Many football fans turned to social media to vent their frustrations and to voice their opinions; they took the bait.

Football has been on the rise in Australia ever since the A-League was founded and John Aloisi scored that against Uruguay. Ever since that night, the anti-football element has been trying to keep the game trapped, but you cannot halt progress nor prevent the inevitable.

Australia is a nation of many sports and each sport is important to our national identity. But football is the most culturally diverse, and football is the most inclusive, as it is for everyone.

Active supporters from many A-League clubs were insulted by these recent events, rightly so, but instead of reacting on social media and boycotting matches, it is critical to the game’s future that we fill the stands, chant passionately for our teams, and ignore any future, futile attempts to halt our game’s progress.

Australian football must stay united – from the FFA, right through down to the youngest fans.

Amidst this turmoil, it is important to acknowledge the many recent positives relating to Australian football – positives the anti-football media is blatantly ignoring.

The Socceroos were voted Asia’s best-performing national team for 2015, Ange Postecoglou was named the Asian Football Federation’s coach of the year, and results from a recent study showed that among children aged between 6-13, football is their sport of choice.

Evidently football is still wrongly perceived by a number of ignorant and jealous individuals, but it is of paramount importance that those who truly understand football and its nurturing culture stay united and let the game be the retaliation.

Sooner or later these ignorant individuals will realise that football is the Beautiful Game, and it is becoming Australia’s game.

When they eventually do open their eyes and hearts to the game, football fans can collectively say, “We told you so.”
