Chris Gayle may be the self-proclaimed Universe Boss, but the Twenty20 star says he’s playing second fiddle to Aaron Finch at the Melbourne Renegades.

Gayle’s opening partnership with Finch will go a long way to deciding how the Renegades fare in the Big Bash League.

“It’s going to be a cracking one. I’m looking forward to that,” Gayle said.

“We all know Aaron Finch’s capabilities … he’s a superstar.

“It’s his team. I’m just joining his team. Hopefully he can accept me and we can work out a way of building partnerships for the team.”

Both Finch and Gayle boast scarcely believable T20 high scores of over 150 and are capable of destroying any attack on their day.

Finch, Australia’s T20 captain, is likely to be called up to the national side when they start a five-match ODI series against India on January 12.

However, Finch will be playing BBL until the end of the three-Test series and can’t wait to bat alongside Gayle.

“The statistics would say that Chris is the best player in the world and I’m a pretty good player as well, so it could turn out to be quite a nice combination,” the Renegades skipper said.

Gayle’s previous stint at the Sydney Thunder was a failure for all involved.

Teammates were unimpressed with the Jamaican slugger’s VIP treatment, while on the park in 2012-13 he averaged 19.57 in the BBL.

The Thunder failed to win a match.

“I started the Big Bash pretty well, but faded away in that last series when I actually played for Sydney Thunder,” Gayle said.

“But that’s cricket, you’re not going to make runs all the time – regardless of who the player may be.

“This is a fresh start. I’m looking forward to bigger and better things.

“Hopefully I can get some runs and entertain the fans as much as possible.”

The Renegades’ BBL campaign starts on Saturday night when they face Brisbane Heat at the Gabba.
