Ricky Stuart is set to stay on as Canberra coach until at least the end of the 2018 NRL season.

The club on Wednesday afternoon will announce a two-year extension to the former champion halfback’s contract, which was due to expire at the end of next year.

The Raiders have won just 18 of the 48 matches played under Stuart since he joined them in 2014 and haven’t made the finals since 2012.

But the new deal is a vote of confidence in the club legend, who has been the driving force behind some big-name signings over the past two seasons.

Recruits Blake Austin and Josh Hodgson have helped form a solid ‘spine’ at the Green Machine, which can only get stronger with the arrival of Gold Coast playmaker Aiden Sezer.

Stuart has also helped lock in promising fullback Jack Wighton and Joey Leilua after his mid-year move from Newcastle, as well as England international Elliot Whitehead on a two-year deal.

“They know that we’re building something special,” Stuart said last month after Wighton’s re-signing.

The Raiders narrowly missed out on a spot in the top eight last season, finishing 10th with a 10-14 win-loss record.
