Match result:

The Perth Scorchers have sent the rest of the BBL a message with an absolute demolition of the Sydney Sixers, restricting their opponents to 112 runs and then matching their total with more than five overs to spare.

REPORT: SCORCHERS GO TOP OF BBL

The Scorchers bowling attack was in peak form when the Sixers opened the batting with four of five taking wickets, David Willey the most with three, and none of their bowlers allowing more than six runs an over on average.

Michael Lumb was the Sixers’ best with the bat hitting 47 off 45 balls, but was one of only three batsmen to hit double figure for the side.

After remaining unbeaten in their last match the Scorcher’s opening partnership of Michael Klinger and Shaun Marsh was dominant once again, Klinger’s wicket fell but Marsh and his replacment Michael Harris were able to comfortably get Perth across the line.

Final score
Perth Scorchers 1/114
Sydney Sixers 8/112

The Perth Scorchers and the Sydney Sixers will go to battle in a repeat of the last season’s final on Saturday night. Join The Roar for a live blog of the match starting at 6:15pm local time, 9:15pm AEDT.

After being the last two sides standing in the previous BBL season neither is flourishing just yet in the 2015-16 season, as they currently sit in the middle of the table – the Scorchers fourth, and the Sixers fifth.

The Scorchers are a game behind most of the competition however and a win tonight would make them a very likely candidate for a finals spot and put them in contention for what would be a third consecutive BBL title.

The Sixers on the other hand have played more games than any other side and will be two ahead of the rest of the league after tonight. They’ve got a 2-3 record at the moment after a momentous knock from Travis Head cost them a win on New Year’s Eve. Lose this one and they’ll be 2-4, making finals a dicey prospect.

The major challenge for the Sixers coming into this match is how they will cope with injury. They’ve already lost captain Moises Henriques presumably for the rest of the season following a calf injury, and now are missing Brad Haddin as well after he tweaked his groin in the loss to the Strikers.

The Scorchers have been travelling alright but with wins over the Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Renegades so far it’s fair to say they’re yet to beat any of the better teams in the competition – those two sit last and second-last on the table. Tonight should give them that opportunity.

Prediction: If both sides were fully fit this one would be very difficult to call, but, given the Sixers’ outs, against the Scorchers at home, this one feels destined to be Perth victory.
