Peter Siddle will sit out the remainder of the Big Bash League in a bid to be fit for Australia’s two-Test tour of New Zealand.

Siddle was ruled out of the third Test against West Indies at the SCG due to an ankle injury and he will continue his rehabilitation while Australia’s domestic Twenty20 tournament continues during January.

The 31-year-old Victorian, who is contracted to BBL outfit Melbourne Renegades, is not thought to be in doubt for the trip to New Zealand at this stage but will be closely monitored in the lead-up.

Australia’s first Test against New Zealand is scheduled for a February 12 start in Wellington and Siddle is aiming to prove his fitness before then in the Sheffield Shield.

“Peter has an impingement in his left ankle.,” Australian physiotherapist David Beakley said on Sunday.

“He will return to Melbourne today to commence a period of rest and rehabilitation with the aim of being available for Victoria in their next Sheffield Shield fixture.”
