Duckworth is one of three Australians left in the men’s singles at the Sydney International, after he defeated Spanish lucky loser Inigo Cervantes in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

Duckworth struggled at the back end of last year, regularly being knocked out in the early rounds on the ATP Challenger Tour, and suffered a first-round loss to world No.20 Dominic Thiem in three sets at the Brisbane International.

The Sydney product has won four of his last ten matches, and faces a huge challenge in world No.31 Chardy.

The Frenchman is coming off a win in straight sets over in-form Kazakhstani Mikhail Kukushkin 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Sydney International, after he struggled to find his stride at the Qatar Open, exiting at the hands of Ilya Marchenko during the quarter-finals.

Chardy has managed to win six of his last ten matches and looks almost certain to send Duckworth out of his home tournament in what will be the pair’s first meeting.

The winner will come up against either second seed Dominic Thiem or Gilles Muller in the quarter-finals.

Prediction
Chardy will waltz through to the quarter-finals and defeat Duckworth in straight sets through an impressive display.
