Aussie Daria Gavrilova will look to build on a promising 2015 season by beating Czech veteran Lucie Hradecka in the Australian Open first round. Join The Roar for live scores from 11am (AEDT).
Having claimed big-name scalps Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic last year, Gavrilova has what it takes to progress into the second week of the Australian Open.
At just 21 years of age, the former Russian representative has already left her mark in big tournaments such as the Miami Masters (defeating Sharapova) and Rome Masters (defeationg Ivanovic). Furthermore, she played a vital role in Australia’s first Hopman Cup title victory in many years, partnering Nick Kyrgios a few weeks ago.
All in all, Gavrilova is a talented young player whose double-handed backhand is as a major weapon in her arsenal.
Hradecka is known for her success on the doubles circuit. She has won 19 doubles titles, including majors the US Open (twice), Wimbledon and French Open.
She has appeared in seven singles finals, with her most recent appearance coming just last year in Prague, confirming she still possesses the form required to cause Gavrilova problems.
It’s a classic case of talented youth up against experienced veteran.
Prediction
Coming off a successful Hopman Cup campaign should provide Gavrilova with plenty of confidence, so expect a win for the Aussie in three sets.
