The Victorian Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board have handed down penalties for the cobalt saga, with Mark Kavanagh, Danny O’Brien and Dr Tom Brennan all receiving lengthy disqualifications.

The RAD Board has disqualified Danny O’Brien for four years and Mark Kavanagh for three years over cobalt offences.

Dr Tom Brennan has received a five year disqualification.

A three-year minimum disqualification for a cobalt doping conviction is mandatory.

It is understood all three have lodged appeals with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal (VCAT). That allows the three to continue to train and work, with the long-running cobalt doping saga still to be finalised.

The trainers were found guilty in 2015 of administering cobalt to horses Bullpit, De Little Engine, Caravan Rolls On and Bondeiger, as well as Kavanagh’s former horse Magicool.

The five horses have been disqualified from races in which they tested positive, including Magicool’s UCI Stakes win in 2014.
