Former Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych starts a strong favourite against Bosnian Mirza Basic in the second round of the Australian Open. Join The Roar for live scores from 3pm (AEDT).

Australian fans should be keeping a keen eye on today’s contest between Berdych and Basic, given that the winner will likely face local hope Nick Kyrgios in the third round.

On reputation and talent, Berdych appears the most likely opponent for Kyrgios, and would present himself as a major stumbling block for the young Australian, who outplayed fellow Aussie Bernard Tomic in the Australian Open fourth round last year.

Berdych’s game is all based on power. His serve, forehand and backhand are capable of generating easy winners for the Czech star, and it remains to be seen if his opponent today will be able to contend with such power.

Basic is coming off a good first-round victory over Robin Haase and will ask questions of Berdych if the No.6 seed loses concentration, particularly during the opening set.

Berdych does have a tendency to fall away during set play, as was evident in his first-round victory over Yuki Bhambri, where he was forced to a tiebreaker in the first set after giving up his break of serve. Despite the scare however, Berdych eventually coasted through the match, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Berdych at his best is a staple in the latter stages of grand slams, and should prevail over Basic in straight sets to set-up a potential third round against Kyrgios.
