Melbourne City host Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park in Melbourne in an Australia Day eve clash that the visitors will be desperate to win. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:30pm (AEDT).
Currently sitting in eighth spot on the A-Leauge ladder, Wellington need to turn their current form around (and fast!) if they are going to be any chance of escaping the bottom four before finals roll around.
It has been well over a month since the Phoenix last tasted victory, a 2-0 home win against Melbourne Victory on December 5, and unfortunately for New Zealand fans, there is little reason to think that stretch will be coming to an end tonight.
On top of recent form, history also doesn’t bode well for Phoenix when they travel to face City. From the seven times they have made the trip to Melbourne to face City, Phoenix have left with a win just once.
Road form in general has also been an issue for Ernie Merrick’s men. Of the four games Wellington have secured all three points from this season, just the one came on the road, back in Round 2.
Melbourne City’s form of late has also been far from perfect, however, they have continued to do the one thing that hasn’t been an issue for them during this campaign – score goals.
City has been potent in attack in 2015-16, scoring a dozen more goals than the next best Wanderers (25). As the only side averaging over two goals per game this season, City should again be far too strong up front for a side that has only scrounged three in the last five rounds.
Adding to this, the reward of finishing the round in second place on the ladder should be inspiration enough for City to secure the points.
