Boom Sydney FC defender Alex Gersbach is set to depart the A-League club for Europe after reaching a deal with what is believed to be a Norwegian side.

The 18-year-old defender, who has been one of the Sky Blues’ most reliable players since making his debut in 2014, had earlier indicated his desire to move to Europe.

He will fly there on Monday and if he passes his medical, his new club will announce the deal.

The move is expected to net Sydney FC a tidy profit and could include a sell-on clause if he moves from his new club to an even bigger one.

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold, who has always been a big fan of Gersbach, admits the loss of the talented left-back will hurt the club.

“Alex is a very ambitious young man and I would like to thank him for his service to Sydney FC,” Arnold said.

“It is always pleasing to be able to bring through a young player, develop him and see him get a chance in Europe.

“We would have loved to have kept him for another year, but it’s a great opportunity for him and I wish him the very best for the future.”

Gersbach has thanked the club for developing his skills.

“The chances I’ve been given at Sydney FC have undoubtedly helped me improve as a player and presented me with this wonderful opportunity which lies ahead. I am very grateful for that,” he said.
