Jamie Buhrer has suffered yet another injury blow with the Manly utility set to miss the start of the NRL season with a broken jaw.
Buhrer flew back to Sydney on Sunday morning after being injured in Saturday’s NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park.
He copped a high tackle from Warriors prop Albert Vete in a controversial match on the first day of action.
Manly prop Jake Trbojevic also suffered a concussion in the same game when he was kneed in the head making a tackle on Warriors centre Konrad Hurrell.
Hurrell was not charged by the NRL Match Review Committee, despite being banned for three weeks for breaking Cronulla back-rower Anthony Tupou’s jaw in a similar incident last year and ordered to change his running style.
Buhrer is expected to miss six weeks which will keep him out for the first month of the season.
It was a bitter blow for the former NSW utility Buhrer who was restricted to just seven games last year after tearing his ACL and his latest injury came during his comeback appearance at the Nines.
Manly back-rower Nathan Green suffered a head knock in a tackle against the Warriors and has also been scratched for Sunday’s action.
It leaves the Sea Eagles with just 14 fit men after Jorge Taufua was ruled out with a hamstring problem before the start of the tournament and the club was blocked by the NRL from replacing him.
Manly’s woes headlined a worrying injury toll on the first day of the Nines.
South Sydney winger Alex Johnston suffered a shoulder injury in the first match of the day against the Sydney Roosters and has not been named to take part in the side’s final pool game against Parramatta.
Wests Tigers veteran Chris Lawrence picked up a hip injury but he described it as not serious.
Parramatta winger John Folau also picked up a hamstring problem.
