Australian batsman Mitch Marsh was left fuming during his side’s defeat against New Zealand in Hamilton on Monday after he was dismissed when a stadium screen replay led to a DRS referral.
After appearing to bump the ball back to bowler Matt Henry, the New Zealanders gave just a glimmer of an appeal, assuming, along with the commentators, that the ball had hit the ground near Marsh’s foot before being caught by Henry.
As the delivery was replayed on the stadium screen, however, it became obvious that the ball might have ricocheted purely off Marsh’s foot, rendering Henry’s catch a legitimate dismissal.
After realising the catch was worth an appeal, New Zealand had the delivery sent to the DRS and Marsh was given his marching orders.
