Even with centre Tim Duncan on the sidelines, the San Antonio Spurs have managed to keep winning, and will aim to keep it that way when they travel to take on the Miami Heat who will be aiming to go into the All-Stars break with a win under their belt, after an interesting last week or so. The Heat come into this game having only won two of their last four matches, with losses coming away from home to the Los Angeles Clippers, and then at home to the Houston Rockets where they went down by 13 points. Wins in between, both on the road against the Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Hornets, though, would have eased tensions.

Despite the losses, they still sit second in the Western Conference, only 3.5 games behind the Golden State Warriors.

The Heat meanwhile, are in fourth place out in the east, with a record of 29 wins and 23 losses, sitting 8.5 games back from the leading Cleveland Cavaliers.

For them to hold that in tact, games like this against the Heat are almost essential to win. Especially when you consider the leader of the Spurs defence in Tim Duncan will miss the game. The likes of Goran Dragic and Dwayne Wade have a big role in that regard – in being able to distinguish between when to pass or score and setting up teammates in the paint strongly.

Despite a meeting during the pre-season, the two sides haven’t met yet during the regular season, with one more upcoming match after this one.

The Spurs won both games in last season’s series, and in rather dominating fashion as well. That had followed up from the NBA Finals, at the end of the 2013-2014 season where the Spurs had taken a four games to one victory. That sort of a loss will still burn for some of the more longer-term Heat players, and they can certainly be expected to lift here.

Prediction
The Spurs should be able to get the job done here, even without Tim Duncan. Their defence will need a lift from somewhere, but their attack should still be good enough to get them over the line, particularly if Chris Bosh or Goran Dragic aren’t totally on their game.
