Lucas Browne is the new heavyweight champion of the world and the first Australian ever to take the title after knocking out Ruslan Chagaev in the tenth round early on Sunday morning.
Browne looked like his fight might nearly be over in the sixth round when he took a few blows and was knocked down by Chagaev. However he rallied to survive what was left of that round and fought on.
In the tenth, with a minute left, Browne connected with a blow to Chagaev’s head and sent him down to the canvas.
Chagaev got back up but was clearly struggling. Browne easily landed a few more blows before referee Stanley Christodoulou stepped in to end the fight.
