Match Review:

Melbourne City are temporarily top of the A-league table after knocking Brisbane Roar from first place with a 3-1 win.

The Roar started this match where they left off last week and went ahead in the 22nd minute through a stunning volley from Dimitri Petratos. A Brisbane corner was headed away by City but only as far as a looming Petratos who took a touch with his thigh and lashed home a vicious left-footed volley from outside the box.

City responded positively to going behind however and spent the remainder of the half in attack searching for an equaliser that would have to wait until the second-half.

In the 52nd minute, Fornaroli spun past Hingert in the Roar box with the defender then pulling Fornaroli down in frustration. Not only did that win City a penalty but Hingert was shown a second yellow card and Brisbane were left with ten men. Aaron Mooy stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake dispatching cooly to the right.

With the numerical advantage, City pushed for a winner and although the Roar held on well, City would eventually go ahead in the 81st minute through substitute Anthony Caceres. Caceres rose highest to meet a Franjic cross and headed powerfully beyond Young.

The nail in the Brisbane Roar coffin would then be delivered in the 84th minute as a Fornaroli free-kick bounced off the crossbar and found a waiting Nick Fitzgerald who headed past Young.

It was an enthusiastic display from Melbourne City who walk away deserved winners and temporary A-league leaders. For the Roar, they showed fight with ten men but couldn’t hold on as they again fall from top spot.

Match Preview:

It’s fourth against first as Melbourne City host Brisbane Roar at AAMI Park in a key clash in the race for the Premiers Plate. Join The Roar from 7:30pm (AEDT) to follow all of the action.

Melbourne City did what no other A-League side could in 14 straight games last week, handing Adelaide United a rare defeat.

A spectacular goal from Nick Fitzgerald and yet another Aaron Mooy assist set up the 1-0 win, which sees City looming three points from the top.

They return home in search of a third straight win, having seen off Sydney FC 3-0 a fortnight ago. A dark horse in the title race, City have a quality team at their disposable and a win tonight would put them right in contention for the Premiers Plate.

The team with one hand currently on the plate is Brisbane, who, although tied with the Wanderers on points, are top of the table on goal difference. And if their recent form is anything to by, they will be tough to dislodge.

After proving too strong for Western Sydney a fortnight ago with a 3-2 win, the Roar demolished Melbourne Victory 5-0 last week. Striker Jamie Maclaren struck a hat-trick as he continued to show his quality in front of goal.

After some patchy form, the Roar have really clicked in recent weeks and should they keep it up, it’s hard to seem them being knocked off the top of the table.

City will attempt to do just that with a squad missing Wade Dekker after he picked up a season-ending ankle injury last week. In his place Connor Chapman, Marc Marino and Anthony Caceres all make their way back into the squad.

The Roar have promoted new signing Tommy Oar into their squad, along with Devante Clut. Aside from Jerome Polenz, who is still sidelined with a quadricep injury, the Roar boast a fully fit side.

Join us on The Roar from 7:30pm (AEDT) to see who pulls ahead and who’s left behind in the race for top spot when Melbourne City and Brisbane Roar do battle.
