Due to the new Star Wars film being released in summer, the AFL world missed out on a lot of the buzz. This is an overdue comparison of the AFL industry with their Star Wars equivalents.

Warning: Spoiler alert!

Patrick Dangerfield – Darth Vader
Quickly hero turned villain in Adelaide. Dangerfield was seen to be born as the player who would drive premiership success back to Westlakes but now serves the dark side at Geelong.

Nat Fyfe – Luke Skywalker
Always had the potential since being drafted to become a star and now is one of the most powerful and influential players in the competition.

Gary Ablett – Obi-Wan Kenobi
Even though Ablett is past his peak, his skills are not to be underestimated as he once was and arguably still is the best player in the competition.

Gerard Whateley – C-3PO
Whateley is the book of knowledge in the AFL, no one doubts his comprehension of the game.

Brian Taylor – R2-D2
He makes a lot of sound but most of the time we struggle to understand what he even is saying.

Alastair Clarkson – Yoda
Do not let his small stature fool you, Clarkson is the wisest strategist in the competition as proven by his four premierships.

Eddie McGuire – Emperor Palpatine
Commonly disliked in AFL circles but is more influential than most of us would like to think he is.

Eleni Glouftsis – Princess Leia
The new heroine on the block. She is sharp, broken a glass ceiling and if anyone on the field talks back to her, expect the force not to be with you.

Boba Fett – Hamish Hartlett
A tackling machine with a lethal long range kick who is not afraid to be a pest, will do anything for Ken Hinkley.

Josh Gibson – Lando Calrissian
For those that have seen Gibson in the media, he is seen to be a smooth talker, portrayed as a trendsetter and a bit of a lady’s man. However, do not let his charming personality fool you as he is quite the warrior for Hawthorn.

Rory Sloane – Han Solo
One of the coolest guys in the AFL. Not afraid of any contest, no matter what the consequences.

Taylor Walker – Chewbacca
If you mess with Solo, expect to mess with this brute. Walker always has his teammates’ backs and does not shy away from the physicality side of the game.

Brad Scott – Kylo Ren
Scott is renowned for losing his temper in the coach’s box when things are not going to plan. However, he has possession over a team with a lot of talent, it is just a matter whether he has the ability to bring the club success.

Marcus Bontempelli – Rey
Only emerged recently but is seen as a shining light to be a focal point for the new generation of Bulldogs.

Harley Bennell – Finn
Struggled to settle into his adopted home and decided to go follow his heart, the question is whether he can fulfil his potential as a consistent, brilliant player as we have only seen glimpses from him early days.

Cyril Rioli – Poe Dameron
The most agile player in the competition. Give him an opportunity to attack and he will not let it slip.
