Winx has become some hot property since her win in last year’s Cox Plate and she has not put a foot wrong since then. Winx was a dominant winner of last year’s Epsom and will become the first horse since Super Impose (1991-92) to claim Randwick’s two biggest miles in the same season if she is successful on Saturday.
She could also create even more history by becoming the first Cox Plate winner since Tobin Bronze (1966-67) to win the Doncaster in the same season.
Comparisons have been drawn between Winx and the great Sunline and looking at Sunline’s defeat to Over, Winx looks well weighted to get the job here.
But history is against her, The Courier Mail has already pointed out the short priced champions that have fallen in their bid to win The Doncaster aged 4. Lonhro ($2.10 favourite) wilted under 57.5kg in his Doncaster bid, while the heavy track put paid to More Joyous ($3 favourite with 57kg) in 2011.
Kermadec won the Doncaster last year with 51kg this will be tougher and having more weight than Winx will need a special performance to win.
First Seal has every hope in this with the 3.5kg swing on Winx and at $17 is one of the hopes that I feel could cause the upset. Track and distance gets the ticks for this race.
He or She has won three from four over the distance, one to include in the exotics. Rushed home off slow speed fresh, held ground second up then surged late in a fast-run Blamey! Is paying $19 so is one to include and has 50kg to carry.
Azkadellia is dangerous here with 50kg, is well overdue for a win now and the $9 quote reflects that.
Happy Clapper with the 50.5kg is a good chance has won three from five at the track, might find this tough but is well weighted.
