Results:

Cameron McEvoy has recorded an Australian and Commonwealth record to win the 100 metre freestyle at the Australian National Swimming Championships, with Kyle Chalmers taking the other spot on the plane to Rio.

James Magnussen had a strong swim, but couldn’t put it together, ending up fourth place, with James Roberts in third. Those four will make the relay team for Rio, in what looks like a very strong team.

In other finals for the evening Madeline Groves took out the 200 metre women’s butterfly while Matthew Wilson won the 200 metre breaststroke for the men, but just missed out on the automatic qualifying time for the Olympics.

Cate Campbell and Bronte Campbell both had strong swims in the semi-finals of the women’s 100 metre freestyle while Mitch Larkin was incredibly strong in the semi-finals of the 200 metre backstroke.

Preview:

The Australian Swimming Championships move into the fifth evening, with the headline event being the men’s 100 metre freestyle final. Can James Magnussen can the better of Cameron McEvoy? Join The Roar for live coverage from 9:00pm (AEST).

The final of the 100 metre freestyle will be the headline event for Day 5.

With just two spots available on the team for Rio, Cameron McEvoy and James Magnussen are the favourites to qualify.

In saying that, Magnussen hasn’t been in the best of form. While McEvoy has dominated in both the heats and semi-finals, Magnussen only just scraped into the final, finishing with the sixth-best time last night.

Looking at raw times alone, Matthew Abood from Canberra is the man most likely to stop either McEvoy or Magnussen from qualification. He finished with the second-best time last night, with 48.89, but was still 0.8 of a second short of the time that McEvoy posted.

James Roberts, Kyle Chalmers and Kenneth To were the other swimmers who finished ahead of Magnussen.

The other finals for the evening will be the men’s 200 metre breaststroke and women’s 200 metre butterfly, while both men and women in the multiclass competition will race their 100 metre freestyle final.

The men’s 200 metre breastroke final is shaping up to be a close race, but the just as interesting will be how many swimmers make the cutoff time for RIo. That stands at 2.09.64, yet Matthew Wilson, who is the fastest qualifier for the final, only has a time of 2.10.68. Even that was a two second improvement from the heats.

Based on times alone, he will be challenged for the win by Nichol Schaffer, Jake Packard, Lennard Bremmer and Alex Milligan.

In the 200 butterfly, they are well and truly under the cutoff time, and defending champion Maddie Groves is again the odds-on favourite after qualifying with the fastest time of 2.09.04. She was challenged for the top qualifying spot by Bria Throssell, who swam 2.09.17.

In other events this evening, the semi-finals for the women’s 100 metre freestyle and 200 metre breaststroke will take place alongside the men’s 200 metre backstroke and 200 metre individual medley. Also being swum will be the women’s 4×200 relay qualification.

Prediction
Cameron McEvoy should have the goods to take out the headline race of the evening, qualifying for Rio in the 100 metre freestyle with James Magnussen.

In the evening’s other finals, expect Matthew Wilson to take out the men’s 200 metre breaststroke, and just sneak in with a qualification for Rio, while Maddie Groves should win the 200 metre butterfly.
